Transparency and reform essential to foster citizen participation

With the Supreme Court’s decision on the Citizens United case, large corporations gained a victory to make their voices dominate federal elections.

The Campaign Finance Institute, American Enterprise Institute and Brookings Institution completed a joint project that offers recommendations that will make it easier for citizens to access election-related public information and encourage the majority to become active in politics and promote equality.

“Reform in an Age of Networked Campaigns” recommends the government ensure all communications and information are open and accessible to the public. This can be done by creating a centralized location for election-related information and offer more access for political speech, possibly through affordable broadband.

The report also points on the necessity for improved transparency for political spending. This could be made possible through real-time, downloadable electronic disclosure, advertising logs through the Internet or a single location that offers full disclosure of political spending.

Other recommendations include refining contribution limits and redefining public funding.

In conclusion, the report states that while technology can help transform the political landscape, sound government policies are essential.
